Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2013 Spottswoode "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (98JD, 98JS, 98TWI, 98VN, 98WE, 97DC). Vinous: "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is regal. Just starting to show aromatic complexity and openness, the 2013 is so impressive. Black cherry, plum, mocha, new leather, licorice, incense and dried herbs all build in the glass. The 2013 possesses remarkable depth and muscle, with all the tannic heft that is such a signature of the year. There's a bit more oak influence in the 2013 than there is today, but it works within the style of the wine and vintage. This heady Cabernet packs a serious punch. (AG) " (05/2024)

99 points Lisa Perrotti-Brown for Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is deep garnet with a touch of purple and exudes pure black truffles on the nose to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal a core of black cherries, warm blackcurrants and plum preserves with suggestions of eucalyptus, tilled soil, chargrill and new leather. Medium-bodied with a great intensity of earth-tinged black fruits, it has a firm frame of grainy tannins and a long truffle-laced finish." (10/2018) 99+ points Robert Parker for Wine Advocate: "Yields continued to increase in 2013, with just over 4,000 cases of wine from a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. This is another killer effort from Spottswoode. Inky bluish purple to the rim, it has hints of violets intermixed with sweet foresty notes, blackcurrants, chocolate and a touch of subtle smoke and earth. It is dense, with higher acidity and more noticeable structure than the 2012, but is as concentrated, dense and promising. Some patience is warranted in 2013, and I would suggest waiting another 5-6 years before pulling the cork on one. It is a 50-year wine at the very minimum and a great classic. (08/2016)

“The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, like many 2013s, is still dense, concentrated, and powerful, with an almost gangly style that needs another 5-7 years of bottle age (I wouldn’t turn down a bottle today). Lots of ripe black fruits, cassis, chocolate, and graphite as well as a hint of mint define the nose, and it’s full-bodied, with a stacked mid-palate, building yet sweet tannins, and a great finish. It’s loaded with potential but needs bottle age. (JD) 98+” (05/2021)

“Glorious blueberries, blackberries, violets, and hot stones. Cloves and other spices. Even sliced mushrooms. Full body, very firm tannins, and a persistent and savory finish. A tight and polished young Cabernet.” (01/2016)

“The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, with 8% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot in the blend, is deep garnet-purple in color. It bursts from the glass with scents of creme de cassis, blackberry pie, and chocolate-covered cherries, followed by wafts of licorice, cardamom, and cedar chest. The medium to full-bodied palate is firm and fine-grained with fantastic freshness, delivering loads of mineral-laced black fruit layers and great length. (LPB)” (09/2022)

“This remarkable wine from the famed family-farmed, organic estate impresses immediately in its depth of concentration and stately grace, imparting a wealth of rose-garden compost and wild truffle on the nose. Within the vibrant range of sensual flavor is salted caramel, black cherry and chocolate, alongside a twist of saddle and campfire coffee. *No. 4 Top 100 Cellar Selections of 2017* (VB)” (02/2017)

Decanter
“Nuances of clove, tar and graphite marry with aromas of crunchy dark fruit, introducing a firmly structured and intensely concentrated wine that displays striking cut and energy. This is one of the best young Spottswoodes of recent times, and one of the most vibrant, primary benchland Cabernet Sauvignons of the vintage – it’s also likely to be one of the most long-lived.
