Stony Hill was founded by Fred and Eleanor McCrea, who planted Chardonnay, Riesling, and Pinot Blanc on their Spring Mountain property in the late 1940s. The winery was bonded in 1952 and became known for restrained, non-malolactic Chardonnay aged in neutral oak, a style that set it apart in Napa. The estate sits on steep volcanic and shale soils between roughly 800 and 1,550 feet, now farmed organically and biodynamically. Longtime winemaker Mike Chelini maintained the traditional approach from the 1970s through 2018.
