2006 Domaine J-F Mugnier Musigny Grand Cru

Bid on this bottle of 2006 Domaine J-F Mugnier Musigny Grand Cru (97JG, 96ST, 95BH, 95RP). John Gilman: "The 2006 vintage of Musigny from Monsieur Mugnier is still a fairly youthful wine, but it is starting to stir from behind its lovely structural elements and is not all that far away from drinking with generosity. The bouquet is pure and refined, wafting from the glass in a blend of cherries, plums, cocoa powder, cinnamon, complex soil tones, cedar, mustard seed, a hint of black truffle and a lovely touch of fresh nutmeg in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and complex, with a beautiful core of fruit, still some ripe backend tannin and a long, poised and seamlessly balanced finish. Another five years should really allow this wine to start hitting on all cylinders. It is going to be very long-lived and stunning once it does!" (11/2023)

Int'l Wine Cellar

Deep red with ruby tones. Flamboyantly ripe aromas of black fruits, blood orange, peony and espresso. Huge yet weightless, saturating every square millimeter of the mouth with very ripe dark fruits, minerals and spices. This plush, sweet, extremely unevolved wine is almost monolithic today but the explosive, palate-staining finish suggests that it has a slow and glorious evolution ahead of it. The fruit here was picked with potential alcohol of 13.7%, the same as in 2005. (ST) 96+ (04/2009)

Burghound

A gorgeously elegant and kaleidoscopic nose of high-toned red and black berry fruit aromas liberally laced with natural spices that offer impressive nuance and notable complexity introduces supple, finely detailed and beautifully textured flavors wrapped in a dusty, mineral-infused finish. This dances on the palate yet it is forceful with excellent finishing drive and intensity on the explosive and hugely long, slightly austere finale. This is one of those 'wow' wines as well as one of the best wines of the vintage. (01/2009)

Wine Advocate

Medium intense, vibrant ruby colour. The nose is very floral -- a combination of red flowers and some alluring jasmine - plus notes of dark cherry, cinnamon stick, nutmeg and tree moss. Medium to high acidity and a medium to firm level of very fine tannins. Seamless, elegant style with just enough flesh. Very long finish. (LPB) (05/2010)

Vibrant crimson. Real energy and concentration here and, unusually for all these 2006s, you have to seek inside for more. Lots of bright cherry fruit. Very appetising. Really soars. For the first time in this tasting, on the third day, I am tempted to swallow! Very dense yet not bludgeoning. Just a bit tough on the end at the moment, but real vigour. 18.5/20 points (JR) (09/2009)
