“This feels quite evolved already, it's ripe and punchy, with high alcohol and very grippy tannins. Quite fierce! It does have freshness however, bite and intensity. It grows on you. A bit old fashioned perhaps, but has intensity and grabs your attention. Touch of caramel on the long finish. Complexity is waiting in the wings. No destemming, fermented in concrete, aged in foudres for 24 months. Also contains 1% of Cinsault, Terret Noir, Picardan, Muscardin, Bourboulenc, Picpoul Noir, Vaccarèse, Roussanne, Counoise and Clairette. (MW)” (11/2024)

“A layered and well-balanced Chateauneuf-du-Pape with aromas of wild berries, dried herbs, leather, roasted meat and stones. It’s full-bodied with fine, firm tannins. Lots of layers and poise with a restrained character on the palate, despite the generous nature of the vintage. Complex and velvety with lots of cherry character and dried herbs towards the finish. “Looking at the classic 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Réservée, it shows the ripe, round, opulent side to the vintage as well as classic Pegau notes of gorgeous black cherries, Provençal garrigue, sandalwood, and ground pepper, with some background meaty nuances. “Dark red robe; the bouquet has a beef stock, plunging aroma, is stoked up from within, bears a pine, slight varnish take, grilling, is raw goods, the fruit not yet fully formed. The palate is vigorous, heart on its sleeve in style, doesn’t do restraint or subtle, comes forward with a burst of briar, garrigue-filled content, an inset of cooked plums from the Grenache, a channel of menthol on the aftertaste. “80% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre, 1% each of Cinsault, Terret Noir, Picardin, Muscardin, Bourboulenc, Picpoul Noir, Vaccarèse, Roussanne, Counoise, Clairette. Aged 24 months in foudres. Cask sample. Nose high-toned but generous, the fruit apparent. A bloody, meaty edge to the palate but sweet fruit again, the tannins firm and long with freshness on the finish.
