Saintsbury was founded in 1981 by David Graves and Richard Ward, two UC Davis enology graduates who shared a focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They established the winery in Carneros, recognizing the region’s cool climate as ideal for Burgundian varieties. Early vintages were produced from purchased Carneros fruit before the partners developed estate vineyards, including the Brown Ranch site. Farming emphasizes sustainable practices and long-term grower relationships across Napa and Sonoma. Winemaking centers on small-lot fermentations, gentle handling, and restrained oak to preserve clarity and site character. After more than four decades, Saintsbury remains family owned and continues to refine its Carneros-driven style through careful vineyard sourcing and consistent cellar work.
