2001 Domaine Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Bid on this bottle of 2001 Domaine Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru ((91-94VN), 93BH). Vinous: "Deep, bright red. Subtle, soil-inflected aromas of raspberry, minerals, tobacco and rose petal. Lush, thick and fat, with compelling flavors of musky, sappy berries. The silkiest of these young 2001s today. Finishes with chewy but very smooth tannins and slow-mounting, palate-saturating flavor. (ST) " (03/2003)

While the color has lightened there is still no evident bricking. By contrast there is evident secondary character to the spicy and very earthy nose that reflects just a hint of volatile acidity though I underscore that it is not intrusive and does not reappear on the finish. There is excellent complexity and a lovely mouth feel to the muscular and solidly mineral-driven flavors that deliver fine length on the utterly delicious and equally complex finish. For my preferences, this is knocking on the door of it's full maturity but there is still sufficient tannin shaping the lingering finish to warrant holding it for another few years first. With that said, this could certainly be enjoyed now with considerable pleasure. (06/2019)
