From Robert Parker: "Matt Trevisan is one of Paso Robles’ up-and-coming stars. He’s doing everything right, and it’s good to see him planting a new estate vineyard of nearly 18 acres, building a new wine cellar, and taking full advantage of the gorgeous limestone soils on the hillsides of West Paso Robles. Trevisan has also been ahead of the curve in realizing that the finest Paso Robles wines are usually blends. Undeniably, he has demonstrated a Midas touch when it comes to assembling innovative blends. He is also the only winemaker in this region that I know of who is doing terrific work with Zinfandel, using it as the core component in some diverse as well as creative blends. His wines spend time in an assortment of different sized oak barrels, little of it new."

Wine Advocate

The 2009 Outsider is a rich, sensual wine bursting with fruit. It reveals marvelous depth and balance. Layers of dark fruit, menthol and mint wrap around the intense finish. I especially like the pliancy and generosity here. Outsider is 78% Zinfandel and 20% Syrah and 2% Mourvedre. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. (AG) (08/2011)

Wine Spectator

A rich and intense red, packed with fruit and personality, offering aromas of smoky boysenberry and supple, layered flavors of cherry pie, anise and caramel. Loamy tannins sneak in on the finish. Zinfandel, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2018. (06/2012)

Int'l Wine Cellar

Glass-staining ruby. Red berries and flowers on the nose, with complicating notes of spicecake and cracked pepper. Juicy and open-knit, with good clarity to its raspberry and cherry flavors. The floral note repeats on the long, juicy, refreshingly brisk finish. (JR) (11/2011)

Linne Calodo began in 1998 when Matt and Maureen Trevisan pushed Paso Robles toward its modern era with Rhône-variety blends rooted in the limestone soils of the Willow Creek District. Their approach centers on intentional farming, relying on dry-farming, hand work, and a “nature-positive” mindset that avoids herbicides and minimizes mechanized intervention. Production focuses on Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Zinfandel, with blends built barrel-by-barrel to capture each vintage’s character. Trevisan farms and vinifies personally, guiding fruit from estate parcels and heritage Zinfandel sites into small-lot wines that helped define the region’s rise in the early 2000s.

(78% zinfandel, 18% syrah and 4% mourvedre): Bright ruby. Cherry-cola, black raspberry, anise and woodsmoke on the highly fragrant nose. Plush and open-knit, offering powerful bitter cherry and blackberry flavors and a touch of fruitcake. Closes with excellent cling, smooth tannins and impressive vivacity, leaving spice and floral notes behind. This densely packed but elegant wine is built to reward cellaring. (JR) (11/2013)

Josh Reynolds notes on the producer for Vinous: "Not a year goes by when Matt Trevisan doesn't tell me that he's still fine-tuning his style and thinking as much as possible about ways to reach his potential as a winemaker--and, increasingly, as a grower. A quick look at the names of his wines gives one an idea of his curious nature and he's one of the more reflective producers that I visit, anywhere. He reminds me a lot, in fact, of Jean-Louis Chave, another young vigneron who, like Trevisan, is constantly questioning his own work even though his wines are consistently among the very best examples of his appellation." (6/2015) And praise from Jeb Dunnuck: "A genius when it comes to fashioning incredible blends from Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache and Zinfandel (as well as a few others), Linne Calodo's Matt Trevisan eschews single varieties and makes seamless, elegant and character-filled wines that are always an utter joy to drink." Another Zinfandel-dominated blend is the 2014 The Outsider, which incorporates 15% Syrah and 7% Mourvèdre. Showing a slightly more dark fruit-slanted feel in its cassis, black raspberry, toasted spice and licorice aromas and flavors, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, fabulous balance and sweet tannin that emerge on the finish. I love the overall purity here, and this beauty is another seamless wine that makes the most of these steep limestone hills on the west side of Paso Robles. (JD) (08/2016)

Vinous

Bright purple. An exotically perfumed, expressive bouquet evokes fresh blackberry, boysenberry, lavender pastille and incense; Asian spice qualities gain power as the wine opens up. Densely packed but impressively lithe, offering vibrant black and blue fruit and spicecake flavors and a suggestion of smoky minerals. The floral and spice notes repeat emphatically on the impressively long, sappy finish, which is framed by supple tannins that fold effortlessly into the energetic fruit. (JR) (09/2016)
