From the Côtes de Blaye on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, north of the better-known Libournais appellations, this bottling fits the area’s Merlot-and-Cabernet-based tradition. The 2003 vintage in Bordeaux was defined by an unusually hot, dry growing season, making producer and site selection especially important.

Château de Grandchamp sits on the hillside above Parsac in Montagne Saint-Émilion, where Gonzague Maurice farms ten hectares of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon on clay-limestone soils. The estate has been worked organically since 2010, though certification was dropped due to cost. Vines are densely planted, grassed between rows, and ploughed in alternation, with strict triage in vineyard and cellar to keep only clean, ripe fruit. Fermentations take place in small concrete tanks, followed by aging in tank and older barrels to keep the focus on fruit. The carved figure on the label comes from an eighteenth-century tower in the vineyard, tied to the historic pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.

K&L's Barrel Tasting notes - Sweet and forward ripe fruit flavors. Lighter style - good balance. Easy drinker. Bright and fresh. Ralph: Spice box and clove hints abound in this naturally extracted wine of red fruits. Tasty and refreshing. One of Pomerol's best deals. *1/2 This is a big name Pomerol for a fine price. Decanter

I liked this blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc just as much as the 2015. The lower alcohol here lends freshness, with the ripe Cabernet Franc grapes yielding a nice floral aspect. Not over-extracted, this is a rather classic style. A true Pomerol: bravo! (PK) (09/2018)

Vinous

The 2005 Rouget is laced with the essence of sweet red berry fruit, mocha, dried flowers, mint and worn-in leather. Bright and floral, with savory accents from the Cabernet Franc, Rouget is a super-attractive Pomerol to drink now and over the next decade. (AG) (04/2021)

Wine Advocate

The 2005 is a delicious, complex, outstanding wine from this estate, which has been doing some great work of late. Loads of licorice, truffle, blackcurrant and black cherry fruit are present in this opulent, full-bodied Pomerol. It also has a beautiful texture and purity as well as a long finish. Just approaching full maturity, it has another 10-15 years of further longevity. (RP) (06/2015)

Wine Spectator

There's beautiful aromas of violet and other flowers, with fruity undertones. Full-bodied, with round, polished tannins that caress the palate. Long and very balanced. Harmonious. (JS) (03/2008)

Int'l Wine Cellar

Saturated ruby-red. Sexy aromas of plum, redcurrant, truffle and meat. Supple, round and gentle, with fat flavors of plum, and licorice pastille. Long, ripe finish features supple tannins and hints of leather and game. (ST) (05/2006)

Jancis Robinson

Scented, lilies on the nose. Very rich and vibrant. Glossy and flattering and very opulent though with lots of ripe tannin too. Quite youthful and long. 17/20 points. (JR) (02/2009)

Calvet’s Pomerol comes from the long-established Bordeaux négociant founded in 1818 by Jean-Marie Calvet, a house that grew steadily through the nineteenth century and now sits within the Helfrich family’s Grands Chais de France. In Pomerol, Calvet works as a regional bottler rather than a château, pulling fruit from across the appellation instead of farming its own estate. The wine follows the usual Right Bank pattern built around Merlot with Cabernet Franc and small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon. Pomerol’s modern shape took hold in the twentieth century, and négociant bottlings like Calvet’s offer a broader entry point into an appellation known for limited estate production.
