2013 Jeff Cohn Cellars "So Serine" Rockpile Syrah

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2013 Jeff Cohn Cellars "So Serine" Rockpile Syrah (98RP). Wine Advocate: "The last offering that I tasted from the Rockpile Vineyard is the 2013 Syrah So Serine Rockpile. I am not sure there was any Viognier co-fermented with this wine, as again the color is an opaque purple to the rim, but comparisons with a great Côte Rôtie are not figments of one’s imagination. Extraordinary notes of violets and other flowers intermix with crème de cassis and blackberry, cutting a suave, velvety texture and stunning mouthfeel. This is Côte Rôtie in Sonoma and a magnificent example of Cohn’s brilliance and Midas touch with this varietal. Although this is the most forward of all of these wines, and delicious already, it promises to evolve for at least a decade or more. (RP)" (03/2016)

Founded by longtime Rhône specialist Jeff Cohn, Jeff Cohn Cellars has built a devoted following for site-driven Syrah sourced from some of California’s top cool-climate and mountain vineyards. The “So Serine” bottling comes from Rockpile AVA, a rugged high-elevation region above Lake Sonoma known for rocky soils, dramatic diurnal shifts, and naturally low-yielding vineyards that produce intensely concentrated wines. Named for the Serine clone associated with the Northern Rhône, the wine reflects Cohn’s Rhône-inspired approach, emphasizing savory complexity, peppery aromatics, and structural freshness alongside Rockpile’s characteristic dark fruit intensity.
