2018 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Les Chaignots"

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2018 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Les Chaignots" ((92-95JM), 94RP, (90-93BH), 93VN, 91JG). Jasper Morris: "60 year old vines which always ripen well, 14% alcohol this year. Black centre with a purple rim. Some dense dark fruit with a little black cherry but still quite closed. Lively as well as luscious on the palate, bringing its black fruit, especially the cherries with it without losing the elegance both of the domaine’s style and of Chaignots’ proximity to Vosne. Fine balanced finish." (11/2019)

Les Chaignots sits on the Vosne-Romanée side of Nuits-Saint-Georges, a premier cru that fits naturally within Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg’s Vosne-based cellar. The domaine, now run by the Mugneret sisters, is known for a restrained approach to extraction and élevage, keeping the focus on site rather than cellar signature.

Wine Advocate

The 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots has turned out brilliantly, bursting from the glass with aromas of cassis, black plums and cherries mingled with hints of spices, orange rind and violets. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, with lively acids, ripe tannins and a generous core of fruit, it confirms that Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg performed especially well in the 2018 vintage. Subtle but not invisible wood frames the violet, spice and earth-suffused cassis and plum-scented nose. The velvety and exceptionally rich flavors possess a different and more seductive texture than usual if perhaps a bit less minerality, all wrapped in a firm, serious and youthfully austere finish. Patience required but this is very promising. *Outstanding* (10/2020)

Vinous

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru, like the 2019, has the most expressive bouquet of fruité, crushed strawberry, morello cherries and cranberry; rose petal and light briny aromas emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, and quite fleshy and generous, leading to a supple, vivid finish. Yet again, a sublime Les Chaignots. (NM) (12/2020)

John Gilman

The Mugneret family’s 2018 Chaignots is another fairly powerful interpretation of this vineyard, but the wine’s fine sense of balance augurs very well for its future evolution, it is just a chewy and structured wine and will need a bit more than a decade in the cellar to start to blossom. The bouquet offers up a fine combination of ripe fruit and good soil signature, as it delivers scents of black cherries, sweet dark berries, chocolate, some 1990-like roasted venison tones, a fine base of soil, vanillin oak and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and quite powerful for this cuvée, with a very deep core of fruit, firm, chewy tannins and a long, balanced and very youthful finish. Chaignots and Vignes Rondes are both on the northern side of Nuits and the July hailstorms did not affect them at all, but the structured nature of the 2018 vintage is very much evident in both of these wines, which will be serious long-distance runners! 91+ (11/2019)
