2021 Vice Versa "Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

“The 2021 release of Vice Versa's Beckstoffer George III Cabernet Sauvignon hails from a vineyard block planted on an ancient alluvial fan near Caymus. Aged for 20 months in almost entirely new French oak barrels, this is a terrific Napa Cabernet that is tight at the pull of the cork but builds with tremendous energy and precision with each seductive, enticing sip. The aromatic profile is expressive, with wild herbs and heady blue and black fruit notes dusted with cinnamon spices and infused with volcanic earth notes. Robes of dark silky fruit on the palate are framed by satiny tannins that already feel perfectly polished and integrated. It gives the sense of being wrapped in a silken robe of dark berry fruits. There's a real intensity and energy to this Cabernet's fabulous mineral thread, which resolves like a cresting wave with crushed cocao nibs, dried rose petals, and a hint of citrus peel. “The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer GIII Vineyard comes from a famous site in Rutherford and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon raised 18 months in 90% new barrels. This site never seems to yield the biggest or richest wines in a vintage (although it's a large site, and there are exceptions), and this plays right down the middle with its full-bodied yet balanced, elegant, ultra-classic style. Gorgeous red and black fruits, spicy oak, savory herbs, and smoked tobacco all define the aromatics, and I love its overall balance as well as silky tannins. It actually has some up-front appeal, but I'd still hide bottles for 4-5 years if you can. It will unquestionably see its 30th birthday in fine form.” (02/2024)
