2015 Va Piano "Black Label - Portteus Vineyard" Rattlesnake Hills Syrah
Quantity: 1
Bottle Size: 750 ml
Provenance: Purchased directly from the winery and stored in a temperature-controlled wine storage facility until picked up by K&L.
Va Piano’s story begins in 1999, when its 20-acre estate in Walla Walla Valley was first planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot—varieties that remain its core focus today. The winery’s production ethos centers on meticulous vineyard work: vertical shoot positioning, intensive hand-pruning, leaf-thinning, shoot-positioning, and cluster-thinning, all designed to achieve optimal sunlight and even ripening. Founder and winemaker Justin Wylie shaped Va Piano’s identity after studying in Florence, drawing inspiration from Tuscan architecture and the Italian proverb "Chi va piano, va sano e va lontano." (He who moves gently, moves safely and far.) Today, the estate produces small-lot Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and red blends, supplemented by limited Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Rosé.Va Piano Vineyards Roughly 70% of the vineyard’s fruit goes into Va Piano’s own wines, with the remainder sold to respected Walla Walla producers.

“Bright red-ruby. Slightly liqueur-like raspberry on the nose, with complicating notes of dusty spices, coffee, menthol and charred oak. Surprisingly sweet on entry, then much more closed and gripping on the back half, where the wine's oak element currently clashes with its tannins (Wylie notes that he uses more aggressive oak here for a "more aggressive vineyard"). Slightly disjointed and rough in the early going and in need of some cellaring. These vines on ancient volcanic soil represent the second oldest Syrah block in Washington after Red Willow, according to Justin Wylie. 90+ (ST)” (06/2017)

“The deep purple/plum-colored 2017 Syrah Portteus comes all from a site in the Rattlesnake Hills and was brought up in 30% new oak. Fabulous notes of mulled black and blue fruit, pepper, lavender, and green olives give way to a medium to full-bodied, ripe, rounded, beautifully textured effort that has sweet tannins, good mid-palate depth, and a great finish.” (04/2020)

“Another outstanding wine, the 2018 Syrah Portteus Vineyard comes from the Rattlesnake Hills and has a gorgeous purity in its black and blue fruits, cracked pepper, incense, and violet-laced aromas and flavors. I love its balance, it’s medium to full-bodied and has fine tannins as well as a terrific sense of elegance. Drink it over the coming decade as well. The quality coming from winemaker Justin Wylie over the past 4 to 5 years certainly merits special attention. These are rich, full-bodied, concentrated wines that show plenty of oak yet wonderful purity of fruit as well. 93+” (05/2021)

“Bursting with bright purple and dark red fruits, the 2018 Syrah Black Label Portteus Vineyard wafts from the glass with elegance and finesse and a juicy, ripe-fruited frame. Medium to full-bodied, the palate offers flavors of spiced plum reduction, black peppercorn, black raspberries and dusty florals before displaying fine-grained tannins and succulent acidity. The wine is balanced, spicy and juicy on the long, lingering finish. Only 1,320 bottles were filled. (AM) 92+” (10/2021)
