2015 Va Piano "Black Label - Les Collines Vineyard" Walla Walla Valley Syrah
Quantity: 1
Bottle Size: 750 ml
Provenance: Purchased directly from the winery and stored in a temperature-controlled wine storage facility until picked up by K&L.
Va Piano’s story begins in 1999, when its 20-acre estate in Walla Walla Valley was first planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot—varieties that remain its core focus today. The winery’s production ethos centers on meticulous vineyard work: vertical shoot positioning, intensive hand-pruning, leaf-thinning, shoot-positioning, and cluster-thinning, all designed to achieve optimal sunlight and even ripening. Founder and winemaker Justin Wylie shaped Va Piano’s identity after studying in Florence, drawing inspiration from Tuscan architecture and the Italian proverb "Chi va piano, va sano e va lontano." (He who moves gently, moves safely and far.) Today, the estate produces small-lot Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and red blends, supplemented by limited Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Rosé.Va Piano Vineyards Roughly 70% of the vineyard’s fruit goes into Va Piano’s own wines, with the remainder sold to respected Walla Walla producers.

James Suckling
“This has the stamp of Walla Walla tar and coal smoke with strong mulberries and spiced plum liqueur on the nose. The palate has fine-grained tannins that arrive in elixir-like waves. Fluid and ripe, saturated in dark chocolate and blackberries. Drink or hold.” (03/2018)

“The 2015 Syrah Black Label les Collines looks to be outstanding. Loaded with notions of black pepper, crushed violets, lavender and assorted black fruits, it's medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated and pure, with lots of texture and a great finish. It has good to moderate acidity, ripe tannin and should benefit from short-term cellaring. (JD)” (06/2017)

Vinous
“(vinified with 50% whole clusters and aged in 20% new puncheons): Bright medium ruby. Alluring high-pitched scents of crushed cherry, violet and lavender. Intensely flavored and quite suave, with its red fruit and spice flavors enlivened by a mineral component. Finishes with a fine dusting of building tannins and terrific rising length. Sexy, seamless wine; the pH here is 4.0 but the wine's floral and spice elements give it excellent inner-mouth lift. (ST)” (10/2017)

“Classic ripe blackberry and blue fruits as well as peppery spice and violet notes emerge from the 2017 Syrah Les Collines, which is medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, and elegant on the palate. Coming from a great vineyard on the eastern side of the Walla Walla AVA, brought up in 30% new French oak, drink this beautiful 2017 Syrah any time over the coming decade.” (04/2020)

“Moderately saturated medium red. Sexy scents of raspberry, blueberry, pepper and game; not overly saline like Syrah from The Rocks, but still shows minerality and stony complexity. Delivers lovely texture and fruit concentration, with harmonious acidity and a peppery quality giving definition and lift to the pliant red fruit and spice flavors. This fine-grained, nicely perfumed midweight is neither thick nor heavy. The firm, tooth-dusting tannins are supported by the wine's fruit on the subtly long back end. I love the Old World aromatics here. (ST)” (12/2019)

“From one of my favorite vineyards in Washington, the 2018 Syrah Les Collines Vineyard offers lots of bright blue fruits as well as classic Syrah cracked pepper and floral nuances. Nicely concentrated on the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, with good mid-palate depth and chewy tannins. Hopefully, the tannins will smooth out with 2-3 years of bottle age, and it should have a solid decade of longevity. 92+” (05/2021)

“Beginning with aromas of spiced plum reduction, blackberry compote and black pepper, the 2018 Syrah Black Label Les Collines is spicy and juicy on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, the wine displays a balanced structure with firm tannins and a delightful, juicy nature that will be the perfect accouterment for barbecue and grilled steak. Almost 2,700 bottles were filled with this delightfully lush and savory Syrah. Give it a try. (AM)” (07/2021)

“Dark cherries, nutmeg, chili chocolate, plums and molasses on the nose, with a sprinkling of rock salt. It’s full-bodied, vibrant and spicy, with fine-grained tannins and a long, creamy finish. Excellent energy.” (03/2023)

Wine Advocate
“With a smoky and meaty profile, the 2019 Syrah Black Label Les Collines features a spicy, rocky core that wafts with cinnamon and spiced potpourri. The wine's full-bodied nature is firm in its current state, but it will pair exceptionally well with fire-roasted game meats and barbecue. Offering bold and juicy notes with a sturdy mineral undertone, this Syrah showcases a chewy core that leads to a boozy finish. (AM)” (03/2024)
