Rijk's Private Cellar is a family-owned estate in Tulbagh, founded in 1996 when Neville Dorrington left Cape Town and purchased 137 hectares of uncultivated land in the valley, choosing the site after soil analysis revealed the potential of its vertical shale soils for low-yielding, high-quality fruit. The estate takes its name from Rijk Tulbagh, the Dutch governor of the Cape from 1751 to 1771 after whom the town is also named, and after 14 years of planting multiple varieties, made the decision in 2011 to focus exclusively on the cultivars that had proven best suited to the terroir: Chenin Blanc, Pinotage, and Shiraz. The estate is now run by Neville's son Tiger Dorrington, who grew up on the farm and officially joined full-time in 2016.
