Vinous: "The 2016 Penultimate is fascinating to taste next to its sibling, as it has all of the qualities of this great vintage - namely complexity, dimension and stature - just with less intensity. Bright saline notes give the 2016 its nervy personality, but there is plenty of finesse too. Lavender, sage, gravel and spice play off a core of dark fruit in this stylish Cabernet Sauvignon from the Promontory estate. (AG)" (01/2022)

Promontory is the Harlan family’s rugged western Napa Valley estate, set in a secluded canyon where steep slopes, persistent fog, and an unusual mix of volcanic, sedimentary, and metamorphic soils create one of the region’s most distinctive Cabernet terroirs. Penultimate comes from estate vines that are not yet selected for the flagship Promontory bottling, offering an earlier glimpse of the same dramatic site and its combination of mountain structure, freshness, and savory complexity. The 2016 captures that character with notable tension and precision, reflecting a cooler, more mineral-driven expression of Napa Cabernet than the valley’s broader reputation might suggest.
