1972 & 1975 Bordeaux Tasting Lot

Bid on this 2-bottle tasting lot; including 1-bottle of 1972 Cos d'Estournel, St-Estèphe and 1-bottle of 1975 Talbot, St-Julien. Of the 1972 Cos d'Estournel, St-Estèphe, Louis d'Estournel is credited with shaping the property in 1811, replanting vines and commissioning the sumptuous Far Eastern-styled château, naming it "Cos"—meaning "hill of pebbles"—from a local dialect to describe the gravelly soils of the estate. Cabernet has long dominated here, with Merlot as a blending partner, though the percentages have changed over the years. The carved entry doors from Zanzibar have seen a number of owners come and go but Cos d'Estournel's reputation for archetypal St-Estèphe has never wavered.

Château Talbot is a Fourth Growth in St-Julien, with extensive vineyard holdings planted on deep gravel over clay—classic Médoc terroir that supports Cabernet Sauvignon with structure and longevity. The estate’s parcels lie on well-drained rises close to the Gironde estuary, where maritime influence moderates ripening and shapes balance within the blend. The 1975 vintage reflects Talbot’s traditionally proportioned, site-driven approach of the era, emphasizing classical élevage and the firm, gravel-defined identity of St-Julien.

Professional Reviews

N/A

Decanter

Tasting 100 years of Château Talbot wines—Pretty much the best vintage out of the difficult decade of the 1970s, besides 1970 itself. An extremely mild start to the year - to the point that some leaves appeared in mid February - then turned cold again through to May, meaning relatively late flowering in mid-June under sunny conditions. An August heatwave got everyone excited, until one month's-worth of rain fell from 12-17 September and diluted the grapes. The weather held out for harvest, and alcohols were relatively high for the time at around 13%. The colour here is ruby red, as the wines in the lineup are getting younger. Tobacco notes abound, with very soft raspberry purée. (JA) (12/2018)

N/A

Vinous

Quite deep in colour, it has a slightly meaty bouquet with leathery red fruit, touches of sage and dusty attic. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. (NM) (10/2019)
