The 1970 Croft Vintage Port has a russet core. The nose is detailed and focused with an attractive bouquet of cooked meats, mulberry, spice and leather. It is light and feminine, although it never really develops the nuance that I was hoping for in the glass. The palate is vigorous and not quite as elegant as the 1966: a little more alcoholic and unrefined, the finish more linear with liquorice, burnt toffee and raisin. Moderate length. (NM)

Pale-mid brick. Dried fig, cooked citrus and dried strawberry, with a delicate, floral overtone. Bright, fresh palate, with more dried strawberry and a floral finish. Elegant and coherent, even if not the longest. 17/20 points (TJ)

Croft never seems to get much publicity since the wines, while always very good, sometimes even excellent, never quite reach the superb level of the top houses in Oporto. However, Croft seems to do surprisingly well, often rivaling the top ports, in the less glamorous vintages such as 1975 and 1966. The 1970 is quite good. (RP)

Refined, supple and fresh. Medium ruby, with a nose of plums and black pepper, medium-bodied, with medium to fine tannins and sweet black pepper and fruit flavors. A lovely glass of Port. Will improve for many years. (Web-1988)

Notes

18/20 points Jancis Robinson: "Still firm ruby and lots of fruit and interest. So full of life I wondered when served it blind whether it was as old as the seventies. Croft were at their peak then under Robin Reid and it shows in this vigorous wine. It would have tasted even better in glasses bigger than the Buckingham Palace port glasses, handsomely engraved though they are!" (03/2014)
