1977 Warre's Vintage Port
94
James Suckling
Review Date: 06/2016The Warre was beautiful now. It showed lots of dried fruits and Christmas cake character on the nose and palate. Medium sweet. It was full-bodied with loads of flavor and an intensely flavorful finish. It was perfect to drink.

Deep garnet. Very pretty plum and berry aromas, with hints of honey and toffee. Turns to custard. Full-bodied, sweet and fresh. Firm tannins, with elegance and balance. Will age for a long time, but ready. Generous, but subtle.

This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavorful vintage port and a very good tawny called Nimrod. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop, and while they never quite have the voluptuous richness of a Dow, Graham, or Fonseca, they have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style. The 1977 is quite powerful, very deep and intense, particularly for Warre. (RP)

Mid tawny-brick. Brooding, smoky, spicy nose – almost like it’s in a backward phase – with layers of savoury depth emerging. Not full bodied, but full flavoured. Lots of intensity, but again, I don’t think this is giving everything yet. Still a fair weight of tannins as well. It’s at a muscular, somewhat unforgiving stage right now, but I think this will go somewhere interesting. I won’t be broaching my magnum anytime soon! 18+/20 points (TJ)
Notes
Warre's is known for their sense of restraint and elegance in their vintage ports. While it sometimes means wines that age very well if not quite as long as the big four houses, the 1977 shows beautiful development and tastes wonderfully now. This is ideally to be enjoyed this holiday season and over the next few years.
