Aged in former American whiskey casks, then finished in barrels that previously held PX and oloroso sherries, this single malt balances sweetness, spice and oak. Caramel and vanilla aromas are echoed on the velvety palate, plus cocoa and espresso, finishing with clove, cinnamon and a hint of lemon peel. (KN)

Wet pine bough, tobacco leaf, tea, light rancio, and dark fruit aromas on the nose, as the sherry cask lets you know it’s in the game. More pronounced sherry notes on the palate—chocolate brownies, tiramisu, and a hint of candle wax. Water unlocks chocolate, baking spice, and cinnamon bread. Smooth and creamy on a finish that adds drizzled caramel and honeyed almonds. Balanced sweetness and very smooth sipping—a treat for sherried scotch fans. (DF, Summer 2021)

Glendronach has been one of my favorites in the Sherry-forward group of Scotches for a long time. The nose of the 12 year old boasts dried red fruits, cigar tobacco, old leather, molasses, strawberry soda, and toasted sugar. The palate isn't as rich as other (more popular) Sherry-forward Speysides and Highlands, instead opting for heavy old school Scotch flavors that are accented and brightened by gentle fruitiness. That heft and that fruit combined with a nutty finish make for a whisky that's a treat without lapsing into decadence.

This whisky just keeps getting better, in my estimation. Rich and sherried, reminiscent of summer and winter treats: caramel apples and roasted, candied nuts. The Glendronach 12 has spicy, rum-raisin aromas, roasted nuts--filberts, Brazil nuts--and baked apple and pear notes, which repeat on the palate, so cotton-candy smooth, and the fruit flavors deepen toward the dry, smoky finish. Similar to: Aberlour 16. More flavor than: Glenlivet 12. Fiercer, less smooth than: Macallan 12 or Glenmorangie 10. More easygoing but in a somewhat similar profile to: Glendronach Allardice, Aberlour A'Bunadh. A standby, a classic. UPDATE: I have tried the Glendronach 15 Year Port-finished edition, a really svelte, nice dram, for sure, but I STILL prefer the 12 Year. If you like rich, nutty, sherried single malt, you really ought to try the Glendronach 12.

Notes

Glendronach 12 has become a staple for so many sherry loving drinkers. Unfortunately, just as they were really hitting their stride they made the terrible decision to start chill filtering all of their core lineup. This yanks out that rich mouthfeel in the name of a consistently clear product. We've secured the last of the non-chillfiltered stock of this beloved classic. Rich Oloroso and a kiss of PX sherry make this classic Highland malt a dark and sumptuous dram.
