A mouthful for the vintage, with its lovely berry, chocolate and tobacco aromas and flavors, medium to full body and chewy tannins. Fresh finish.

It retains that lovely tertiary, cedar and raspberry leaf bouquet and there is still that slight barnyard tincture. But compared to Ducru, it shows decent delineation. The palate is medium-bodied and more savory than previous bottles. The acidity is still a little sharp but the hardness has mellowed nicely with a touch of tart cherry towards the abrupt crisp finish. (NM)

I love some of the 1994s and here is a beauty-and for the same price as newer vintages and half the price of the 2005.

Notes

94 points Chris Kissack writes for thewinedoctor.com: "Another bottle of this, a popular château in a vintage that provided a happy hunting ground for fans of the classic style. Even at this age this wine still displays a dark hue in the glass, enveloped by a dusty oxblood rim. Aromatically this offers a lesson in classicism, with savoury notes of blackcurrant laced with herby notes redolent of juniper berry, green peppercorn, mint and rosemary, along with veins of black pepper and soot. The palate is similarly elegant and restrained, showing a dry and savoury structure, a medium-bodied presence through the middle, with a tense and strict frame. It finishes long, direct and it is certainly classically styled. A wine now shaped more by its acidity than by its tannin structure, which has largely faded, but it remains a delight. Drink now, although there is no rush." (12/2019)
