To those of you on our Insider's Advantage mailing list it will probably come as no surprise that this is the latest wine in a run of unprecedented, eye-popping deals! However, this offering from Maxville is just next level, even by our own very high standards! An estate grown, high elevation, mountain-grown Cabernet from Napa Valley, made by a pedigreed winemaker with Cult Cab experience, with almost 10 years of age, for under $20!? Yep, this 2015 Cab hails from Maxville's incredible estate in Chiles Valley. Sitting at 1,200ft above the Napa Valley floor in the Vaca Mountains, these rugged volcanic soils, low yielding vines, and big swings in daytime vs nighttime temperatures mean that this region produces powerful, concentrated, muscular Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaker Camille Benitah was born and raised in Bordeaux where she learned her craft and worked for several historic Chateaux before moving to Napa. Once in California her obvious talent and strong work ethic propelled her career and soon she was promoted to Head Winemaker at cult winery Merus on the slopes of Howell Mountain. Sharing many of the qualities of Howell Mountain, her style of winemaking fits perfectly with the fruit of Maxville Estate and how gracefully this wine has aged is a testament to that. At a recent staff tasting in our newest Culver City store, the staff could not believe what the cost of this wine was after I tasted them on it blind! Many guessed 5-6 times the price, and I can't say I blame them. The wine still has plenty of ripe, rich fruit, redolent redcurrant, plum, loganberry, some hints of cassis and briar patch notes. Then there's some beautiful bottle development showing in the form of cigar box notes, leather, camphor, some pencil shaving and graphite. The tannins have resolved beautifully with 8 years of time resting in bottle, but the wine still has lots of power and density. This wine sold for around $65 - $75 when released, the current 2021 vintage at the winery is $115! Yeah, that's right...10 years of perfect maturation and it's $95 less expensive than the current release! This is just one of those ridiculous deals that comes around every now and again that sells out in a flash and then people spend the next couple years asking if we'll ever get it again! So, don't hesitate here, load up. Drink now or over the next 5 or so years, maybe more if you like lot's of secondary characters. What's not to love about a perfectly aged, ready to drink Napa Cab for $20!? Cheers!

Wait until you see the colour on this one! It's just like liquid crushed black cherries, if that were a thing. There is a nose of very dark currants, blueberry, cinnamon, freshly turned earth and sandalwood. In the mouth, the first flavors that I get are the cinnamon spice and dusty tannins. Particularly at the back of the tongue. After these initial flavors, there are opulent (more so) blackcurrant flavors with black cherry (less so) and a tip of the tongue tart (clean) oak and light exotic spices. The finish is quite long! This is a great value of a wine, and it should cellar well for a number of more years.

Aromas of black plums, a touch of blueberry, mocha dust, nutmeg, dark coffee beans, and toasted pecans. Leather, espresso, earth, and a touch of menthol, and charcoal on the finish. A great bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon, showing development from the bottle age, at an insane value. Cheers!

Notes

Maxville has an incredible estate high in the mountains of Chiles Valley, a sub-AVA of Napa Valley, famed for its rugged, rocky soils and cooler growing temperatures from the 1,200ft+ elevation. Established back in 1974, this large property is over 1000 acres in total, but only 10% of that is planted to vines. The rest left as wild habitat, forest and a large lake. Winemaker Camille Benitah was born and raised in Bordeaux. She learned her craft at the La Tour Blanche school in Sauternes, and worked for several Chateaux around Bordeaux before moving to Napa. Her career developed quickly and soon she was promoted to Head Winemaker at cult winery Merus on the slopes of Howell Mountain. Camille makes powerful, rich wines that embrace what Napa Valley does so well, however, her Bordeaux roots are still evident in the structure and ageing potential of the wines.
