The glorious rums coming out of Foursquare continue to impress, although certain releases have really pushed the limit of what the rum loving community is willing to pay, this awesome one takes a step back into the realm of reason in terms of price. Considering the time and effort that the distiller puts into each of these releases, there's no question that they're undervalued, and you don't have to look far to find examples of the market taking advantage of Foursquare's reasonable prices (flippers and gougers exist always). That said, I'm more interested in our customers drinking great products and I think when these become too dear, even if they're undervalued, it does discourage the idea of enjoying them on any weekend. That's why I was heartened to be able to offer this new release, a rather old and delicious one, for under $150. Let's taste it! A ridiculous mahogany color (1.6). The deep complex flavors hear are exactly what we sign up for when it comes to old Foursquare. The beautiful amalgam of deep pot still rum character and rich nutty sherry. Chocolate covered raisins, cherry candies, hazelnut spread, burnt orange peel. With some air we get bold dry tropical fruits, sweet oak, licorice root, and rich vanilla. The palate is rich with dark red fruit and citrus oils. Lots of coffee and toasted vanilla as well. The finish turns on the potty funk a wee bit and the nutty oloroso character balances out the sweet front end with a twinge of bitterness as the burnt orange and roast oak take over. Expect exactly what you want here. A true powerhouse expression of this master's idiosyncratic style.

Notes

Foursquare Rum Distillery, St. Philip, Barbados really should need no introduction. Originally set up by Reginald Leon Seale, the great-great grandfather of the current Master Blender and Distiller Richard Seale, the distillery has become the byword for classic Caribbean rum. Richard Seale is an absolute iconoclast who has turned the rum world on its head. In an industry dominated by huge drinks corporations that has long sold a story above the quality of its product, Seale has fought for transparency in production and labeling of rum. Derided by some as an idealistic purist, he is championed by many (including K&L) as a leader in an industry that has transformed how we think about rum and what rum consumers want. The Exceptional Cask Selection releases are Foursquare's most prized and limited stocks. Each barrel is carefully followed throughout its maturation and specifically annointed by Mr Seale himself for inclusion in this special program. This, the 26th release, is a blend of three rums all distilled on their Double-Retort Pot Still and a Continuous Twin Column Coffey Still. Two were double cask matured before final blending. All began life in ex-bourbon and one spent 13 years in ex-oloroso sherry butts and a 2nd 7 years in the same with the final component spending all 16 years in ex-bourbon. The resulting rum is without a doubt one of the world's finest and at this competitive price may be one of the best spirits available dollar for dollar in any category.
