2018 Losonci Királyleányka Matra Hungary (Orange/Natural Wine/No Sulfites Added)
Notes
Winemaker Bálint Losonci, began his career as a local wine writer but fell in love with the process. Early on he recognized the potential of the Matra region even though it was known mostly for bulk production during the Soviet era. Working with native grapes and all low intervention winemaking, Bálint has become one of the region's great cult successes. The Királyleányka is an indigenous grape grown in the region and this bottling is what the importer Eric Danch, calls "a mix of extremes." First the vineyard received zero spraying of any kind in 2018. Then Bálint picked at peak ripeness, macerated the grapes on skins for 60 days and then left it on the lees in barrel for 5 years without racking. The wine is bottled unfiltered with zero additions. Only 400 bottles were produced. The wine draws from the classic Georgian Qvevri winemaking style but also has a bit of rancio character that you might find in certain Catalon or Spanish wines. Either way, it is unique and one of the most interesting wines on our shelves right now. *Orange Wine* *Natural Wine* *No Sulfites Added*
