I had never before see or heard of this producer or vineyard site...however, after tasting this they're very much on my radar! A tiny production wine from a small hillside vineyard in the Chehalem Mountains AVA of the Willamette Valley. The wine is really made in a way that highlights the beautiful minerality the region's volcanic and loess soils impart on the wine. Fermented with native yeast in large format French oak Puncheon casks. The winemaker's job here was just to guide this crystalline, bright fruit from vine into bottle without masking any of the complex terroir driven characters of the site. Aromas and flavors of crushed quince, Cox's Orange Pippin apple, wet river stone, pie crust, white flowers, barley flour, subtle struck flint. Focused and elegant, mineral driven in style, a great wine for folks who crave white Burgundy, Chablis etc, but have been priced out of everyday drinking prices. Our Insider's Advantage deal on this wine really is not reflective of how excellent the wine is, don't be scared off by the low price, this is delicious, elegant Chardonnay with a great sense of place.

From the cold, foggy heights of the Chehalem Mountains in the Willamette valley of Oregon, Stedt winery brings us an absolutely unbeatable bottling of truly "Burgundian" Chardonnay. With a pure volcanic-mineral heart and soul, underpinnings of pumice rock, cool river stones and marine fossils generate the core of this chardonnay, supported by subtle white flower overtones of lily and pollen. Crisp green apple, bright white peach, with a dash of pacific saline - this wine will be a happy surprise to anyone looking to spend less than $30 on white Burgundy, and a downright steal when you see that it's actually less than $20! A truly serious bottling of Pure Chardonnay, see what's so special about the Chehalem Mountains AVA!

Notes

From a small, hidden gem vineyard in the Chehalem Mountains. Sitting at 600-700ft, this hillside site is perfectly situated for growing world-class Chardonnay. The vines grow in in the region's famed Laurelwood soils that are made up of wind-blown loess and produce wines of bright aromatic intensity. The fruit is gently foot-troden and given a short soak on skins before a very gentle press cycle to extract the first cut of juice. The wine was then spontaneously fermented with native yeast and aged in 500L French oak Puncheons for 11 months. The wine is then racked to tank for a further 6 months of ageing that really focuses and gives great linear tension to the wine. The name of this wine is "Intent" and one can clearly see that there is a lot of very deliberate intent here to craft a refined and transparent Chardonnay with a real sense of place.
