The Vacheron Sancerre never disappoints. Reflective of the three primary soils in Sancerre, Vacheron's flagship wine is stretched across all three major terroirs. The Terres Blanches (marl) portion adds richness and breadth, the Caillottes (limestone) adds cut and acidity and the Silex (flint) gives that smoky mineral quality. The 2023 is powerful also reflecting the vintage. It is filled with aromas of Makrut lime leaf, gooseberry, peach and wet stone. The mouthfeel is textured and powerful and the finish, long. This is youthful for sure and will surely open more over the next year or two but what an impressive Sancerre for sure.

What I love about the white wines of Vacheron is how distinctive and subtle they are. This bottling showcases the clean, crisp, mineral forward side of Sancerre. Fresh acidity, gooseberry, longan berries, lanzonés, hint of grass, gun flint, and a smoky finish. Delicious on it's own, perfect with sashimi.

Notes

The Vacheron vineyards are all close to the village of Sancerre itself and have been in the family for 9 generations. Today, this domaine is run by two cousins, the Messieurs Vacheron. Both have sons studying viticulture to carry on the family tradition. The vineyards cover 34 hectares with two principal soil types; "silex" and "caillotte" or chalk. Organic viticulture has been a goal of the family for a number of years; as of 2003, the entire estate is certified organic. The following year the winery was converted completely to biodynamic agriculture—to be sure, you won't find more terroir-driven Sancerre anywhere else in the appellation. From the importer: "With cellars located in the charming, hilltop town of Sancerre, Jean-Laurent and Jean-Dominique Vacheron have vineyards in mainly the eastern part of Sancerre on hard, flinty soils as well as smaller holding on softer limestone and clay soils. Their 'village' Sancerre bottling draws from both terroirs to create a subtle, mineral and completely satisfying wine. One of the few estates in Sancerre to harvest entirely by hand this wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in tank for at least 4 months before bottling." *Biodynamic*
