There's a first time for everything. First time K&L has carried this wine-in fact i had never heard of the property til i was sent a sample to taste. I bought it immediately. 22 years old and going strong. Soft, sweet, and elegant. And all this for less than $1 a year. And now the last batch arrives in January 2024 at 25 years old and kicking. Mature coffee, tea, tobacco aromas- sweet and lovely at 80% Merlot. Prime rib here for under $20.

This is a more pleasant and delicious bottle of aged Bordeaux than it has any right to be at this price. The tannins are silky soft, the abv is low at 12%, but the core of red fruits is still rich and glowing, and the nice subtle earthiness along with the pleasant acid-driven finish make this just so utterly drinkable. Case up, this is delicious and has plenty of life left in it.

This is a mature and soft value from a good vintage and a great appellation. The wine is earthy, juicy, plump and utterly drinkable. Super bang for the buck!

Notes

Sourced from 10 hectares of hillside vineyards (80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc) planted in the 1960s on clay-limestone soils. The chateau is currently run by the fifth generation. With Château Valandraud as a neighbor, this is an interesting under-the-radar find.
