The 2016 Lafon-Rochet is very intense on the nose. A mixture of red and black fruit, crushed violet, wild mint and crushed stone unfolds with aeration. It's perhaps a little Barolo in style. The palate is beautifully balanced with supple tannins, very velvety smooth with lovely acidity and sensuality on the finish. Gorgeous. A high point for the estate. Tasted at the Lafon-Rochet vertical at the property. (NM)

Excellent quality, this is one of the high points of the past few decades of Lafon Rochet, demonstrating the huge potential of the site. Fine but firm tannins, plenty of juice and lift, mandarin peel, graphite, cassis, blueberry puree, cassis and loganberry fruits. Bitter dark chocolate also with a tannic frame that hugs without constricting. Harvest September 29 to October 20. 40ha, deep gravels and clay, 30 year old average vine age.

An explosion of all manner of black berries with discreet, toasty and smoky oak, makes this a joyful St.-Estèphe. Then the great balance of ripeness, lively acidity and velvety tannins come together beautifully at the elegant finish to make this the best wine from this producer in modern times.

Now producing impressive wines, this estate has made a firm, rich wine in this vintage. Its tannins are very present, but they have a velvet edge that is immediately attractive. Not that the wine won’t age: its structure and good acidity will see to that. *Cellar Selection* (RV)

This is easily a reference-point vintage for Lafon-Rochet, and one that any Bordeaux enthusiast should make an effort to procure. Sometimes overlooked in the scheme of top Left Bank properties, the last few vintages have taken things to another level at Lafon-Rochet—don't miss their 2016. Leading with black fruit notes, with hints of gravel and tobacco, the aromas are captivating. On the palate, it is rich and textured, full of dark red and black fruits, lively acidity, and a long, deep finish that is layered with fine tannins and notes of black pepper. While it leans towards the modern side, it still retains a wonderful sense of place with fantastic minerality and balance. Or, to put it another way, it will have a ton of appeal to wine drinkers of all stripes for a long time to come.

Notes

95 points, Antonio Galloni - Vinous: "A sleeper in this vintage, the 2016 Lafon-Rochet is positively stellar. Bright, translucent and super-expressive, the 2016 has so much to offer. Lavender, tobacco, cedar, mint and dried herbs give the 2016 striking aromatic top notes to play off the darker fruit flavors. The 2016 is pure class. Don't miss it." (12/2018)
