Attractive spice, walnut, earth and currant character follows through to a medium body, fresh acidity and a tangy, complex aftertaste. Fun, traditional-styled cab.

It's not uncommon for us to receive incredible California Cabernets at great value prices, but the the Liparita knocks it out of the park. Just the aroma of this wine is worth the money! On the nose, you will be blasted with floral violets and lavender, currant, cassis, and spice. With further aeration, there's graphite, licorice, sweet oak, clove, and vanilla. The Liparita has a rich, velvety texture balanced with good acidity and tannic structure. The finish is smooth and cohesive. A customer asked, "Why so cheap?" I said, "I don't know...but man, it's GOOD!"

The nose is filled with wild, savory and tar filled notes followed by hints of black currant. On the palate the wines bold richness stands out immediately but the wine’s structure reins in any overly fleshy concepts and gives one a sense of balance and direction. The flavors are definitely more savory, less of your new, Napa sweet fruitiness but more of an old school mountain Cabernet without harsh tannins. The wine’s finish gives a real framework to the powerful presence but is balanced by smooth tannins and a supple and surprisingly long finish. For the price point this is exceptional.

AVA Designate Cab hailing from the same appellation as Dominus yet more than a fraction of the price?! I think I found my new STEAL OF THE CENTURY. With 5 years of age, this cab is rather approachable now, and an honest must buy for the Napa Cab Drinker. Full bodied, robust, and packed with a nice oomph, this cab rocks. Worth a bottle, or two, or even a case, if not several cases.

Notes

The historic Liparita label traces its origin all the way back to the late 1800s. The founder, William Keyes, was an early pioneer in the history of California winemaking, having been among the first to designate an appellation wine with his Howell Mountain Claret. Unfortunately, the combination of prohibition and then phylloxera took its toll on many wineries early on, including Liparita. The label was revived several times over the past century, but it was Napa Valley grower Spencer Hoopes who finally resurrected the historic name in 2006 by bringing Liparita back to the luster of its glory days. He's been producing stylish appellation designated Cabernets since. Anne Vawter began as the winemaker with the 2012 vintage. She credits much of her winemaking style to the years she worked with legendary winemaker Heidi Barrett while at Paradigm winery in Oakville. She holds a degree in viticulture and enology from UC Davis. As she notes of this wine, "2014 is a voluptuous vintage. A well-balanced crop and easy going growing season gifted us by lengthening the 'just right' window of physiological maturity and peak flavors. This is a layered and refined expression of our Liparita Cabernet, still powerful, but with an active mid-palate and spacious freshness on the finish." The fruit was sourced from prime vineyards in Yountville. The wine is a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, and 2% Petite Sirah aged for 21 months in 100% French oak of which 33% is new.
