A blend of 41% Cabernet Franc, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Malbec, 14% Merlot and 9% Petit Verdot, the 2013 De Compostella spent 24 months in barrel, 15%-20% new oak in the first year and then transferred into used barrel. It has a voluminous and very pure bouquet, ebullient red cherry and wild strawberry fruit, with just a touch of cassis. The palate is medium-bodied with sensual tannin, as usual, and with perfectly judged acidity; this is a more "sedate" and "relaxed" De Compostella that is not too worried about being "wine of the year." Rather, it is happy and harmonious in its own skin; it is happy to just give pleasure and complexity without excessive effort. It's one of the most elegant releases since their debut in 2004.

A hefty wine, with a dense core of steeped plum, blackberry confiture and mulled currant fruit, all backed by loamy tannins and a lingering Turkish coffee note. A broad swath of tobacco flows underneath. This needs a little cellaring to meld fully. Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2017 through 2023. 150 cases imported.

This is a truly delicious wine and I'm so excited we have it in the line-up of Bordeaux reds from South Africa. Stellenbosch has been known to produce some absolutely phenomenal Cab-based reds and this Mvemve falls at the top of my list for the highest quality in recent years. It is rich and expressive, velvety, complex and perfectly balanced, which is owed to the inclusion of all 5 Bordeaux varietals. I will definitely be adding a few of these to my cellar to both drink now and hold to look forward to soon.
