2016 Bellegrave, Pauillac
93
James Suckling
Review Date: 01/2019A very attractive array of purple flowers, dark stones and cocoa powder with a wealth of spicy dark berries and earthy nuances. The palate has a very plush, juicy and deep-set build of regal tannins. Long, seamless finish. Right on form and one of the best from here in recent times, as well as being one of the value wines of the vintage. Try from 2023.

The 2016 Bellegrave is a distinctly mid-weight, perfumed Pomerol built on aromatic presence and mid-weight structure. Sweet red berries, wild flowers, mint and blood orange are all given a good bit of freshness from the Cabernet Franc. This is very nicely done. (AG)

This is all silky elegance, falling over itself to welcome you in. 2016 is such a good vintage for rediscovering those little, overlooked estates, and this is lovely, with enveloping tannins and touches of rusticity that remind you there are still estates working in a traditional manner without extreme selection, even in Pauillac. Very good. (JA)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Bellegrave (Pauillac) gives cassis, baked plums, black cherries, cigars and earth on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied, taut, grainy and vibrant with good length. (LPB)

Oh the great memories of staying at Chateau Bellegrave in the 90s! This property is in the heart of Pauillac very near Pichon Lalande and Latour. A great value from one of the best regions for 2016s.
