Great depths of fruit, this is dominant Merlot in the blend but the character of the vintage is all about blackberry, cassis, graphite, tannins and firm, well defined tannins, and they dominate the palate - confident but already welcoming, this is a great 2nd wine, one of the standout successes of an exceptional year.

The 2016 Dame de Montrose is also gorgeous, and the second wines of Bordeaux continue to gain in quality. A blend of 52% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged in 30% new oak, this beauty has impressive amounts of creme de cassis, graphite, violets, and damp earth that give way to a medium to full-bodied, layered, pure, and seamless beauty that has real class. It’s well worth seeking out and will hopefully help you to keep your hands off the grand vin for at least a few years.

Extremely perfumed and beautiful with bright, violet and plum aromas. Full to medium body, very fine and firm tannins and transparent fruit. Linear and refined with a very long finish.

2016 La Dame de Montrose is deep garnet-purple in color. It comes galloping out of the glass with powerful notes of baked black cherries, blackberry preserves, and warm cassis, plus suggestions of wood smoke, underbrush, and pencil shavings. Medium-bodied, the palate is tightly wound with the black fruit and earthy layers well-framed by ripe, grainy tannins and oodles of freshness, finishing long and minerally.

As the Grand Vin from Montrose in 2016 is one of the gold standards of the region for collectible upside, so is their second wine, Dame de Montrose. Long considered one of the highest-performing second wines in the landscape of Bordeaux, it performs at another level altogether in vintages like 2016. Pure cassis mingles with floral notes, fine tannins, and a long, mineral-lined finish. It displays a great mixture of accessibility and refinement, and certainly has echos of the Grand Vin. Sure, it's not a first-growth-caliber rival like the banner wine at Montrose, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it hold its own against some other top wines from the Médoc.

A classic "second" wine made for pure enjoyment right now. It is soft, approachable, with loads of exotic spices, and a very inviting aromatics. A Saint-Estèphe through and through.

This is a great second wine. Mostly Merlot in the blend-black fruit aromas, full-bodies but balanced perfectly. Great depth and length.

Notes

91 points, Neal Martin for Vinous: "The 2016 La Dame de Montrose has a backward, surly bouquet that demands coaxing from the glass. Black fruit intermixes with pencil lead and light mint aromas, but it is certainly tightly wound. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Cohesive, if missing that killer blow on the finish. Given past performances, this might have just closed up a bit." (1/2020)
