Lots of chocolate, mocha, darker fruits, and dried herb-like notes emerge from the 2012 Château Barde-Haut, a medium to full-bodied, concentrated 2012. It's showing a touch of maturity yet still has plenty of tannins and structure, good mid-palate depth, and outstanding length. I continue to think 2012 was a great vintage for the Right Bank, and this certainly doesn't change my mind.

A dense and polished red for the vintage with dried strawberry, raspberry and chocolate character. Full body, firm tannins and a pretty finish. Needs two or three years to soften slightly but already impressive.

The 2012 Barde Haut is medium to deep garnet colored. It gives up subtle scents of baked plums, dried cherries, and Christmas cake, plus hints of Indian spices, dried bay leaves, and iron ore. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a sturdy frame and lovely freshness, lifting the earthy flavors to a long finish.

The 2012 Barde-Haut is dark, fleshy and voluptuous, with notable depth and resonance from the Merlot. Mocha, bittersweet chocolate, plums and spices all add nuance, but above all else, the 2012 is a wine of spherical texture and intensity. Give it a few years to fully unwind. The blend is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, aged in 300-liter barrels, 80% of them new. (AG) 92+

Drinking very well! Evolves in your glass, with delicious flavors of dark plums, kirsch, mocha dust, cola, tobacco leaf, and leather. Plentiful acidity maintaining freshness! Cheers!

This is a serious and complex wine that is packed full of drinking pleasure. The nose is inviting and seductive with dried red fruits and nice savory undertones. In the mouth, it is full bodied and has a lot of structure and depth. It will open up after an hour or two of decanting.

Super classic Bordeaux notes of pencil shavings and cassis on the nose, along with some seductive savory herbs. A great acid backbone leads to a palate filled with both black and red fruits, along with lots of bittersweet chocolate. An excellent St-Émilion that shows no signs of the challenging vintage.

Notes

90 points Neal Martin - Vinous: "The 2012 Barde-Haut has a much fresher nose than its peers with well-defined blackberry and raspberry fruit mixed with cedar and violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fine acidity; it's taut and fresh with admirable structure on the almost Left Bank styled finish. A good, solid Saint-Émilion here." (02/2022)
