The bouquet sparkles with notes of bark, oak, brown sugar, bacon fat, sautéed banana and maple. The palate entry is creamy, toffee-like and silky; the midpalate offers flavors of pastry, chocolate fudge, nougat, chestnut and honey. Finishes harmoniously with the sweet flavor gracefully melded to the texture. A perfect oak-aged molasses rum. *Best Buy*

English Harbour is a stupendous offering that represents some of the old school style rum, without the over the top esters of a Jamaican. Fermented with a mixture of baking yeast and wild yeast, the distillery uses open top fermentation to encourage some of the funky wild yeast to interact with the wash. This is then distilled on an old copper column still for a light bodied rum that's full of character. It's kind of an in between style, not quite light and sweet like the Spanish, not quite heavy and funky like the English. Altogether a wonderful expressive and delicious Caribbean rum.

This is a spectacular and honest dry rum. Not sweetened after the fact, this rum starts its life as molasses, is distilled in one of only 2 copper column stills in the Caribbean and then spends 5 years in ex-bourbon barrels in a warehouse without temperature control on the island of Antigua. That's it. No game playing here, just a beautiful, honest rum. Clean and retaining the richness of its molasses base, the 5 year also expresses a touch of vanilla, biscuit, and structure from the oak influence. This is an outstanding sipper or wonderful in a very simple rum cocktail like a Cuba Libre.

Notes

Antigua Distillery is the force behind this delightful, traditionally-styled rum that should please cocktail fans and serious rum aficionados alike. Not quite as powerful or funky as the Smith & Cross Jamaican, and not as sweet or caramelized as the Guyanese El Dorado, the English Harbour is aged in American oak for five years and shows a bit of the earthy molasses flavor before transitioning into notes of mellow caramel and citrus. Great for Mai Tais, but great on the rocks as well. A true middle-ground rum option.
