Diageo has introduced this new no age statement variant of Talisker single malt. The name reflects the distiller’s aspiration to enhance the maritime notes in this expression. Refill and rejuvenated casks have both contributed to its maturation. The nose is youthful but rounded, with brine, burning wood embers, vanilla, and honey. Sweet and spicy on the palate, with cranberries and black currants, while peat smoke is always present, plus black pepper. The finish lingers, with walnuts and fruity peat. (Vol. 22, #2)

I am a big fan of the Talisker 10 and Distiller's Edition, but I found myself purchasing my second Storm. That should count as a vote in its favor! It's appealing, if lighter and subtler--despite the name--than the others. Think of the "storm" component more as, "a walk on the beach the morning after a storm, eating saltwater taffy, while someone is smoking fish over a driftwood fire nearby." Smoked ham, smoked fish, and briny aromas, with a sweet caramel presence. Hint of plaster, but not like Jura. Oily and sweet on the palate, with a bit of heat on the back--not as pronounced as the 10, I think. For someone who would like to ease in to an appreciation of peaty single malt, this is a superb bridge.

It's funny--I am not sure what an "un-storm-like" whisky is but I think what that's referring to is the expectation that this new release from Talisker would be all about Big Peat. Instead, I think that this new release stays in the Talisker realm of balance. There is more power and more smokiness than salinity, but with the signature sweet malt and peppery spice along with more vanilla (recharred Bourbon barrels?)

This is a wonderful addition to the Talisker line of single malts. The aromas are interesting and inviting, offering malt, smoke and hints of sea mist. In the mouth it is full bodied with a hint of sweetness that is balanced out with smoke and brine.

Notes

Whisky Advocate's "Highlands/Islands Single Malt Scotch Whisky of the Year" (2013) The new American release of Talisker Storm is finally here -- a non-age statement expression featuring a marriage of both young and old Talisker whiskies. Still bottled at the trademark 45.8% ABV, the fruit of the Talisker is front and center, with soft vanilla and malty goodness, but the finish is much more peaty than the other Talisker malts. That's not to say smokier, but rather peatier -- earthier, saltier, and more briny. The finish is surprisingly un-storm-like, making this whisky one of the more ironic releases of 2013, but that's not to say it isn't delicious. Fans of the distillery will be pleased with the extra punch, but those looking for sheer power should stick to Islay. The Storm is a punchier version of Talisker, but it's a mere blip on the weather radar for big peat fans. For fans of more integrated and balanced peat, this is a great choice. 5 out of 5 stars from F. Paul Pacult's Spirits Journal. Double Gold Medal San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2014.
