Hard tannins give taut astringency to this wine. But then, that's the signature of Three Palms, which always starts life tight and tough. Made since 1978 by Duckhorn, the wine has shown a consistency rare among Merlot single-vineyard bottlings. This 2010 shows Three Palm's hard tannins, but has such lush black cherry and mocha fruit that it's easy to drink now. It's a worthy followup to the magnificent 2009, but better structured. *Cellar Selection*

Connoisseurs Guide

Here is a deep and very complete Merlot that gets everything right in terms of both its slightly succulent fruit and its supple, well-balanced feel, and, while wonderfully rich, it is never close to being too much of a good thing. It is the most complex and layered of the very attractive Duckhorn brood and ends with a structured, Cabernet-firmed finish, and it shows a more serious side to the grape that will become increasingly apparent as it develops over the next half decade. *Two Stars*

The 2010 Merlot Three Palms Vineyard exhibits a saturated ruby/plum/purple color in addition to rich, broad, deep flavors of red and black fruits, graphite and spicy oak. Full, rich, structured and restrained, it is an exceptional effort of purity, balance, authority and aging potential. It should hit its stride in two more years, and last for 10-12. (RP) 92+

Notes

This is the Merlot for people who aren't drinking any #*@% Merlot. The Three Palms Merlot is grown just off the Silverado Trail near Calistoga, in the northern Napa Valley. In cool years, like 2010, it tends to develop significant tannins wrapping the rich, brambleberry fruit. "Duckhorn's Three Palms bottling is one of the oldest and most consistent Merlot vineyard designations in California..." according to critic Steve Heimoff, writing in the Wine Enthusiast. The 2010 is 82% Merlot backed up with 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.
