I have yet, incidentally, to connect with Angeli’s red, though it is imported. Angeli’s 2011 Coteaux du Cap Corse Blanc (into whose Vermentino he apparently sometimes sneaks Codivarta) practically flings mineral dust in your nose, with its chalk dust, saline, alkaline evocation of sea breeze, as well as intimations of shellfish which translate into a mouthwatering sense of shrimp shell reduction and clam stock that mingle with succulent pineapple and Persian melon on the palate. Firmer in feel than the corresponding 2009 (I missed out on the 2010) but no less refreshing, this offers in its long finish an invigorating reprise of mineral diversity. It is evident to me now that this cuvee can age nicely for more than two years, but I lack the experience to be more specific.

Notes

This lovely Corsican white is typically 100% Vermentinu (although occasionally come Codivarta may be added) from Domaine de Gioielli 's traditionally farmed 4 hectare plot on the schist and clay hills of Cap Corse peninsula. Fermentation takes place with native yeasts only, in cement and stainless steel 'cuves'. It is a fresh, salt and sea-kissed white, offering a complex array of mineral, floral, and delicate garrigue notes on a citrus core. Its fleshiness is balanced by tangy acidity and fine length. Cap Corse is a sparsely populated penninsula on the island of Corsica. Founder Michel Angeli established the domaine after settling on the island to escape the bombardments of World War II. The first harvest was in 1952 on this long forgotten piece of land which was originally established by the Genovese Empire in the 14th century.. Michel Angeli still works the vineyard, and his wine is now imported into the United States by Kermit Lynch, even though it was never intended much beyond the local and enthusiastic seafaring population.
