Made by Oaxacan native Efrain Nolasco, who came to the USA in 1987, worked his way up as a construction worker, and decided that, after living the American dream, it was time to go back to his hometown of San Juan del Rio and give something back. In 2000, he joined together with a group of indigenous people to create a high quality mezcal that could be exported to the United States. In 2006, he became certified organic to help distinguish the purity of his mezcals from other products. In 2009, K&L located the Benesin, his first organic batch that sings of fresh agave and the mineral smokiness that really separates mezcal from tequila. The San Juan Del Rio bottling is a higher proof with a fuller body. It shows a bit more roundness than the fresh and spicy Benesin. Every step of the process is overseen by the 1,500 natives of San Juan del Rio, and the profits go to the village. 48% abv, 96 proof.
