Review Date: 07/2022Medium to deep straw-gold in color, the 2005 Coutet delivers alluring candied nut scents of praline and honey walnuts over a core of dried apricots and mangos with a touch of pineapple upside-down cake. Full-on hedonic in the mouth, it has opulent layers and just enough freshness, finishing long. (LPB)

Surprisingly dry, this has richness rather than sweetness, and intense, powerful botrytis. The honey is intensely perfumed, along with baked apples and spice. Certainly a long-aging wine. (RV)

The 2005 Coutet is very refined on the nose with delineated yellow plum, tangerine and honeysuckle scents. Chamomile and saffron aromas surface with aeration. The palate is beautifully balanced with viscous honeyed fruit, laced with orange peel and quince, perhaps with just a little abruptness on the finish when you wish it would hang around longer. Very fine, though, and I can see a long life ahead. Tasted from an ex-château bottle served at the estate. (NM)

The Coutet from 2005 is a beautiful and classic bottle of Sauternes in the making, with exemplary elegance and harmony showing right from the start on both the nose and palate. The deep, pure and very classic nose offers up a fine mélange of peach, orange, honey, incipient notes of the tea leaves to come, acacia blossoms and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and beautifully balanced, with excellent focus, fine mid-palate depth, sound framing acids and lovely length and grip on the plush and sophisticated finish. Today this wine is already a joy to drink, but it will deliver notably more complexity with sufficient bottle age. A lovely example. 92+
