A medium-complex bouquet that demands focus and time; offers scents of grass, textile, peanut, beeswax with an underlying honeyed sweetness. The palate is mellow and marshmallow sweet, then features luscious and delicate flavors of honey, cola nut and cream. Elegant, poised and succulent. (PP)

The best rum on the planet for under $50. It's made mostly from DDL's old wooden pot still with more of that funky molasses note through the mid-palate. Love it. All day, every day.

This rum is both tasty and interesting. It has the winning sweetness that one would expect from a rum from Guyana. The El Dorado 15 is also very complex, with layers of flavors from sweet to an almost subtle earthiness.

Demerara-rah; that’s the spirit! The El Dorado 15 year certainly shows the benefits of the time that the spirit spent in barrel in the initial intensity of the nose and palate. What is better still is it pulls back a bit towards the finish and finds a little reserve, avoiding the bombast of certain other “too much isn’t nearly enough” long-aged spirits. Toasted chestnuts, antique woodsy vanilla and candied pear, papaya and pineapple ornament a core of lush, sweet sugar cane that switches about between the continuum of sugar-brown sugar-molasses without ever settling on just one, a sort of olfactory iridescence. Pull up an evening and a chair and settle in; you’ll want to linger long—in the same way that the finish does—with this rum.

Notes

El Dorado Rum is made by Demerara Distillers Limited in Guyana, perhaps the single greatest rum producer on the planet. Having operated since the 1600s, it supplied the British Royal Navy with rum for more than 200 years. The Diamond Estate Distillery still churns out a variety of spirits today. DDL's historic stills, built in the 18th and 19th centuries, are still in operation and produce a number of amazing flavors. The 15 year old draws its core flavor from the use of the distillery's historic wooden pot stills — the Port Mourant double still and the Versailles single pot, built in the 1700s. The old wooden pots capture earthy, funky molasses flavors and add an intensity unavailable in most modern expressions. Aged in refilled American oak casks, the richness of flavor from the wood marries beautifully with the characteristic pot still heaviness to create one of the great rums available today. The El Dorado 15 is the standard by which many rum enthusiasts judge great rum.
