I was lucky enough to drink this with Krug's CEO, Margareth Henriquez. Margareth explained the new codes on the backs of the bottles, that allow the Champagne lover to learn the disgorgement date, year of the base harvest of the wine as well as the number of vintages blended in and the oldest of them. She was far too modest about this new feature, as it reverses the secretiveness for which Krug has long been known. Now, thanks to her influence, Krug is one of the most transparent houses. Our bottle was Krug at its toasty, extroverted best, with plenty of buttery brioche and mid-palate weight. It also had zing and acidity, and showed attractive aspects of both youth and maturity.

The Krug Grand Cuvée is a wine fully deserving of every big of prestige it commands, which is a lot! Krug is so far ahead of the competition that in an industry where production details are well-guarded secrets, Krug lays it all out for everyone to see — no one comes close to putting the effort and trouble that Krug puts into the Grand Cuvée. Blended from over 120 different wines from 12 different vintages going back to 1990, the wine displays depth and maturity and youth and freshness at the same time! Rich, ripened stone fruit flavors with aged white-Burgundy notes and warm brioche undertones. Its freshness is reinforced by a focused acid and a mineral-driven mousse. Despite its price, this is still one of the best values from Champagne.

Customers constantly ask me what my favorite champagnes are and I always tell people that each bottle is like a child to me and you can't possibly ask a mom to pick a favorite. But its a pretty well-known secret that Krug has always been a special little "baby" for me. Krug is hands-down my go-to tête de cuvée. While priced for those extra special occasions or a moment when you want to splurge, the Grand Cuvee over delivers and never disappoints. The grandeur of this cuvee is apparent immediately. Aromas of marzipan, Asian spice, white flowers and Meyer lemon are a mere tease of of what this cuvee possesses. The complexity on the nose is followed by a harmonious balance on the palate between the maturity of the oak-fermented reserve wines in juxtaposition with the focused, delineated acidity that comes from suppressing malolactic fermentation. Gorgeous now, even better with age, the Grand Cuvee is a must!

Because you can never be too rich...or have too many bubbles! This Grand Cuvee is truly grand - very concentrated, with a silky smooth texture and length for days. Drink it on your private island, while sitting on your treasure chest and eating a foie gras cheeseburger! (tasted 6/10/09)

Notes

Allen Meadows for Burghound on the producer: "After being a partner at Jacquesson, the house of Krug was founded by the visionary Joseph Krug in 1843, an accountant who had traveled the world and from the outset was determined to learn all he could to create outstanding champagne and he knew from the outset that required quality vines and grapes. The legacy has been passed down for generations, including his son Paul who moved Krug in 1868 to Reims, where the cellars have been since that time. In the 1960s Krug began to buy its own vineyards. One of the originators of non-vintage champagne, the original "Private Cuvée" became the Krug Grand Cuvée in 1979. Following the original founder's hand-written notes which emphasized "good terroirs" such as Le Mesnil sur Oger, in 1971 Krug was able to purchase 15 acres of vineyards. In 1986 Krug released a single vineyard champagne with the Clos du Mesnil fruit from the 1979 harvest. After the success that followed, they chose to make a single vineyard champagne from Ambonnay, which they purchased in 1994 releasing the first Clos d'Ambonnay 1995 vintage in 2007. At the helm of Krug today is Olivier Krug who became director in 2009. In 1999 Krug was acquired by the luxury goods group Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy, with no changes to philosophy or operations since founded six generations ago." (06/2017)
